For this purpose, the National Stock Number (NSN) system is well-solidified in the United States and its allied nations. Rather than relying on inconsistent manufacturer part numbers, NSNs are assigned and managed by the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) and other cooperating authorities to organize all items regularly employed by the Department of Defense and government contractors.
